These paintings were designed to raise awareness about endangered plants and invasive plant species. When working with images of vegetation, I am reminded how delicate the balance is between nature and progress. The purpose of these compositions is socioecological. Consider that pollinators are becoming extinct and herbicides are killing off entire plant species. Invasive plants bear disease and choke out native plants. Some plants simply no longer have suitable places to grow. The human race plays a significant role in the health of the environment. The consequences to our actions are far-reaching. I refer to this work as a process of “building paintings, provoking thought and stimulating conversation”. I prepare textured surfaces by collaging labels, maps, organic materials and recycled resources that relate to the painted imagery.
